Copenhagen Climate Summit broadcasts TV quality video via Connect Pro

Anyone who has been watching the news lately will know that the United Nations Climate Change Conference is running between Dec 7th and the 18th, 2009.

What you may not be aware of is that the US State Department is broadcasting many sessions live from the event using a publicly accessible Connect Pro Meeting Room.

You can access the sessions every day starting at 9:00AM UTC/GMT+1 at the following address:
https://statedept.connectsolutions.com/uscenter

The video feeds in the room are TV quality and are made possible by Refined Data's Talking Stick pod for Connect Pod. Using Talking Stick the State Department is able to broadcast 30fps video with perfectly syncronized audio and users have the option of switching to full screen view at any time.

If high quality video of live events is important to you, don't miss this unique opportunity to see how it can be done. The meeting room is open to the public, simply enter as a guest.

Please Note: transmissions stop at 7:00pm UTC/GMT+1 (noon EST)

A full schedule of events is available at: http://cop15.state.gov/uscenter/meetingroom/index.htm

Enjoy!

Thanks Terry! Great to see. Very very good sound quality! Quite an improved image quality also! Just a short lag. Do you happen to know the audio set up? Of course the camera set up would be interesting to learn from. We might be setting up something similar in March.
Also, how is recording different with Talking Stick compared to a normal Audio- video pod set-up?
Kind regards,
Jonas

Re: Copenhagen Climate Summit broadcasts TV quality video via Connect Pro

Hi Jonas,

The lag you were seeing was because the audio was being broadcast via the ACP VOIP system but the State Department has now switched that over to Talking Stick so the audio and video are in perfect sync.

They are using Camcorders and Microphones hooked up to a video mixing board that sends its output to a video capture card. The signal is then published using the free Adobe Flash Live Media Encoder to an FMS server.

Talking Stick then subscribes to the live FMS stream and broadcasts in in the Connect Meeting.

If this all sounds complicated, it actually isn't. The pod simply loads in to your Connect Meeting Room and we provide the FMS service as a turnkey solution. You can literally be up and running in about 15 minutes.

Great, thanks Terry. Will check the audio switch in Friday's broadcast.
When recording seminars in which Talking Stick is used, is there a difference? Are there other things to consider? If yes, are there differences when playing a recording as well?
Best regards,
Jonas

Re: Copenhagen Climate Summit broadcasts TV quality video via Connect Pro

Hi Jonas,

Talking Stick can play back FLV, MP3, JPG, PNG and SWF files in a recording but the pod will attempt to play the same live streams in a recording as were used in the original event.

So, if you have a camcorder pointing at passing traffic during a live event in the day and you play the recording at night, you will see the live feed from the camcorder at night too not what happened earlier.

For now, our clients who use Talking Stick use screen capture software, which many of them prefer in any case. They can add titles, transitions, call-outs and edit out all of the dead spots and unnecessary content that way. We use Total Screen Recorder Gold for this purpose $29.95 and it does a great job.

We are working on a method of creating a recorded stream but with potentially dozens of video inputs in a meeting and the need to jump to any point in the playback, it's quite a technical challenge.

Despite this one small drawback, the ability to dynamically switch between unlimited numbers of webcam feeds, live camera feeds, recorded FLV and MP3 files as well as including watermark overlays, lower-third titling effects, remote control of Pan, Tilt and Zoom etc. makes this pod a unique addition to the toolset for any organization concerned about the quality of the video they are broadcasting.

We are hoping to introduce SIP based video-conference feeds to Talking Stick in Q2 of 2010 so that users of Tandberg and Polycom equipment will be able to join Connect Pro meetings using existing hardware.

Ah, thanks Terry! Firstly, what a big difference the audio configuration did! No lag at all, and super quality. Secondly, yes, as you point out the benefits of the pod outweigh for sure the recording issue!
