Latency increases when I start the webcam

Hi,

We have a strang problem. When a customer of ours starts his webcam his latency increases from 50 ms to about 3 seconds or more. Nothong seems to be wrong with the connection or the computer.

Anyone who has an ide what it could be?

Regards,

Dan

Re: Latency increases when I start the webcam

This could be a few things...video is both a bandwidth and CPU intensive operation so depending on what kind of processing power and bandwidth connection the user is on, this is a very real scenario.  There are a few things you can do to help minimize this:

1) Try lowering the video quality of the Camera & Voice pod.  You can do this by opening up the Pod Options menu to something like "Fast Images".

2) Try lowering the Room Bandwidth via Meeting > Room Performance & Appearance > Optimize Room Bandwidth.  The room features will smartly adjust to try to accommodate the bandwidth set here, so if user is on a DSL connection, it will try to smartly limit how much bandwidth things like video take up.  (see here for a tutorial on managing meeting bandwidth: http://www.connectusers.com/tutorials/2 … index.php)

3) Shut down any other bandwidth or CPU intensive applications on the computer.  Even if a user is on a good connection, if there are bandwidth or CPU intensive apps running this will reduce the amount of computing power and connection available for the meeting.  Some examples of this would be leaving an email client open that is constantly checking for new messages, an IM client, a music player that is downloading podcasts in the background, etc.

This tutorial also contains some additional webcam best practices:

Hope this helps,
