Cleaning PPS_USER_SESSIONS table via T-SQL

Is it safe to delete PPS_USER_SESSIONS for old session entries? I realize you cannot delete them all due to referential constraints but this table grows larger as our custom app generates new sessions for requests. Does this degrade performance over a certain table size or would it help if old session entries were deleted periodically? I think on the older versions, the session id's were valid for 12 hrs, has the default been changed to 30 mins on version 8 now? What are recommended practices for generating session id's for requests generated from an external app? Does it make sense to generate a new session for each request or store the session id temporarily for a certain time and regenerate when the set time expires?
