Losing access to recordings

I'm curious if anybody else has had this problem, and if there is a patch or fix.

(Connect 7 using Firefox 3, Win XP)

If toggling a recording Access from Private to Public, than back to Private, access to the recording is lost/locked...Access can not be changed again, and any other link (Edit, Make Offline) will cause the "Not Authorized" window to come up.

The only work around I could figure out, is to log out of the system, log back in, open the meeting room, make a short recording. This appears to temporary "fix" the problem, and access is restored.

I have a video of the problem, and work around if anybody is interested.

Re: Losing access to recordings

Typically once we make a recording, we move it to a public area in our content library.  That being said, there are a few times that I will make something and for one reason or another I leave it in the room it was recorded, and simply toggle the access to public.  I have switched it back and forth with no problem, but I do not use this very often.

Is this something that is repeatable for you?  If so I would contact Adobe Support because I have found a number of things that happen to me but not really anyone else that turn out to be bugs in their system.  It would be good to hear other people's experience before going that route though.

Re: Losing access to recordings

Thank you for the reply,

We have a quite a few independent users, so moving the files is not really an option to us.

The problem is repeatable, but not necessarily consistent. I've had it happen in both Firefox and IE, so I doubt it's browser related. I have also had other user be able to reproduce the problem as well.

Here's a video of the problem, and solution:

Re: Losing access to recordings

Watched the video and have one question.  When you clicked make public for recording 0 the last time, did it change to public or remain private?  Also, were you logged in with the same login both times?

If you used the same login, and recording 0 went to public on that last click, I would say the next step may be Adobe Support.  Otheres on the board who are more familiar with it might be able to help you with getting the debug log to see if that gives any clues as to what the issue may be, but that would be the only other thing I can think of.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Re: Losing access to recordings

Sorry, the video cuts it short, but I was unable to make both recordings Public again, and the same login was used throughout.

I thought we had gotten in contact with adobe yesterday about the issue, but I just found out we did not. I'll have our admin contact them asap. I was just wondering if anybody else had seen the issue or could reproduce it.

thanks again

Re: Losing access to recordings

Sounds like a typical Adobe work around - their work around requires a work around to actually work.

Re: Losing access to recordings

I did a meeting yesterday. which I monitored remotely to ensure audio/video was good. This morning, went in to view the recording - nothing. Never got past the 'Connecting' screen.  So I used  the forum tip for zip/download the files so I could maybe grab the audio and add it to the PPT. Didn't work. Screen read that no such file existed.

I have had so many problems with recordings that I have a folder called ' Not for Use' in my lectures folder. So I selected to move this file there to examine another time. It disappeared. Completely. I combed through every folder  in my account. Nada. Gone.

Found this thread. Tried recording a shorty in same meeting room as suggested above. Viewed - fine. Moved it to 'Not for Use' folder - fine. Viewed it there - fine.

So where did my other file go?

Log in, log out, clear cookies, clear cache, clear SunJava Console....log in again. Nothing File is gone.

I wonder: as a 'power user' of Connect at my univ, I have encountered a gabillion problems. We are not Above hosted. We do not have an 'Adobe' expert on site to manage our servers. How many of the problems I find are Connect issues versus server issues?

Those of you who host your own server for Connect: how much time does your resident Adobe expert spend resolving these issues? are the issues solved by someone locally?

Re: Losing access to recordings

We have a hosted account, and I can tell you that I probably see just as many issues with recordings as you do.  Adobe support has admitted to me some time last year that they had not been putting a lot of effort into recording problems, but also said they were working to fix that mindset.  It doesn't mean support of recording problems is any better, only that they are more aware that there are problems and that it is an ever growing list.

Connect in and of itself is a great tool, but is very buggy.  As soon as one thing gets fixed, 10 more problems seem to show up.  To answer your question, I would say that there are times that the problems you have are server problems, but the bulk are probably Connect problems.

Connect 7 was Adobe's first major release of the product since acquiring Macromedia, so this is somewhat expected (though one would expect better from Adobe).  I am more interested in how CP8 will perform when it comes out.

Regarding licensed accounts who host their own servers, I have no answer for you, but would be interested to know myself.

Re: Losing access to recordings

Hi Carrie,

I experienced the same problems after moving to Version 7.0.  SP2 hasn't fixed this issue.
Some recordings build properly and others do not.
On the system, it shows Disk usage of 0.0KB.
When users attempt to access the recording, it will hang on the grey "connecting" screen and never load.

Has anyone else experienced this?  Version 7 has been extremely frustrating, Version 6 SP3 worked well.

Regards,
Stanley

Re: Losing access to recordings

Stanley - You would be amazed by how many times I have heard that.  The surprising part is that I have found most of what used to work and doesn't is because Adobe tried to do something new and failed.  I look at Connect 7 (all the way to SP2) as a beta software and we are all beta testers.  Maybe with 7.5 later this year things will be better.  I hope we don't have to wait for 8 to come out next year.  I can tell you my company will have a hard time waiting that long for improvements to this beta product.
