Connect vs. WebEX and GoToMeeting

Hi everyone,

We've been using Connect to host our classes for several years. Most of our classes have about 25-40 students and both our students and instructors seem to genuinely like the Connect experience.

We're now considering launching a series of webinars in which we expect as many as 500 participants. I'm wondering if anyone has experience using WebEx or GoToWebinar for hosting similar events? What did you like/not like about the software? Did your users report any difficulties?

In particular, I'm wondering if it's easier for users without admin privileges to install the WebEx and GoToMeeting plugins than it is for them to update their Flash Player?

Any feedback or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers!

Re: Connect vs. WebEX and GoToMeeting

Here are some comparative studies:

I think the 'right' answer will depend upon your requirements. But it is my own assessment that if one can afford Adobe Connect then there is nothing better than Connect!
HTH.

Re: Connect vs. WebEX and GoToMeeting

Hey Kristian,

My understanding is that WebEx and GoToMeeting both require two separate installs which require access on the computer:
- Java (which may or may not be already installed already)
- The client application (in both cases, a Java application)

I believe you need admin privileges to install either of these. In my experience, it's been much more likely that the customer already has the latest version of Flash - particularly now that web browsers are starting to include it themselves.

Re: Connect vs. WebEX and GoToMeeting

Thank you for your input.

So after a little research I've come to a few conclusions:

-Mac users need admin rights to install Java.
-WebEx requires meeting hosts to install a desktop client
-GoToWebinar simply shares whatever you are looking at on your desktop
-GoToWebinar doesn't really support video streaming
-Both WebEx and GoToWebinar are significantly less expensive than Connect

Re: Connect vs. WebEX and GoToMeeting

Check out R-HUB's TurboMeeting software.  An R-HUB server supports 3000 participants in a meeting.  TurboMeeting also does not require the attendees to download anything: attendees will use Flash if its installed or JavaScript.  TurboMeeting scores higher than WebEx and Connect, but is a few notches below GoToMeeting according to : https://www.webconferencing-test.com/

Re: Connect vs. WebEX and GoToMeeting

That's a strange comparison page with what appears to be a strong bias against Flash Player. Connect is low in the list because it received 1 out of 5 for "Software Installation," even though the page lists the install as optional. That's a pretty tough grade considering most users don't need to install anything to join a Connect meeting. Even if the user wants to get the Connect add-in, that install happens quickly and seamlessly without admin rights. Meanwhile the Java-based applications receive 5 of 5 in the same category. I guess the author would rather have a client that is "quick and easy to install" (even if it requires admin rights to install it) than to have no install at all. ;-)

As noted by others, the right answers will depend on your situation and you'll likely get as many opinions as answers.
