USB Webcam Goes to Black

I have not been able to resolve this issue despite trying the troubleshooting suggestions.  When I try to fire up my webcam in a video pod - selecting the USB camera rather than the integrated laptop camera the view goes to black.  I can see the image in preview before I go live the first time then the image goes black. When I stop and try to preview again, even the preview is not seeing the camera.

Anyone have this issue, were you able to resolve?

Are the drivers for the camera up to date? When you go out of preview does another application launch to manage the camera?
