Import Users bawks at hyphenated name
Appears that using Import to load users from a spreadsheet doesn't like a hyphen in the username of an email address (not the domain name). The error message is not clear, but removing that user allowed the upload to take place.

Re: Import Users bawks at hyphenated name
So the hyphenated email can't be used as a username either, if manually entered. So... it is okay as an email address, but it can't be imported or used as a logon username.
Is that an oversight or by design?
