Painfully slow video loading times

Hi all,

As part of our companies training offering, we provide video content as part of our modules. These are often 3-8 minute clips, of which there can be several within a 70-80 slides presentation.

We have managed to reduce their file size to around 20-30 mb each (FLVs), import them using Adobe Presenter, with our presentation zip's coming in at between 100 - 200mb in total.

These videos load absolutely perfectly and quickly in the UK and USA. However in the middle east, and China, they often buffer for 10 minutes, just to play a 3 minute clip. Almost defeating the object of the training in the first place, as delegates lose interest.

It is imprtant to note that the buildings which are experiencing these problems have great internet bandwidth and speed, having passed and even beaten speed tests in the UK.

So I was wondering if there is a solution? Is this a common problem? Is there a solution I am missing? Or is there a method to host videos externally (YouTube, Vimeo, etc) which will work?

Thanks.

Re: Painfully slow video loading times

This is probably due to the fact that there are server clusters in the US and in Europe. So people in those locations would be reaching out to a server that is relatively close to them, and doesn't have a long path through the public internet to get there.

I would assume the people in the Middle East are ultimately hitting the Europe cluster, or maybe an East Coast US cluster, but either way it is a long trip. Another thing to consider is internet connectivity in that part of the world, which may be causing issues as well.

For the people in China, they are having to travel (virtually of course) to the US to get the content. This is a very long trip through the public internet and will have significant delays and slow load time.

You could host through YouTube, of course that then makes your videos public domain, or some similar tool. Most sites like that have a world wide network of servers to better deliver content to viewers, no matter what their location.  Another solution could be to set up your own Connect server deployments with an origin server (or multiple origin servers) in the US (or wherever) and then have Edge servers placed strategically around the world to give users a closer access point.

Just a matter of what best fits your needs.
