Set Manager role for a group vs. individual

Where does one find information on how to set a Manager for a group rather than having to select each individual in the group and assign to the Manager?

You cannot set a Manager for a group, only individuals.

Yeah, I figured it wasn't the desired answer, but it is better than trying to fight the system for hours/days just to come to the conclusion that it can't be done.
