Losing Quiz Answers When Overriding Fail/Pass Settings in Curricululum

We have a quiz that isn't allowing users to continue in the curriculum occassionally, and we have taken to going into the curriculum and overriding the user if they've appeared to pass.  When we do this, we lose the answers the user posted to the quiz. 

Does anybody know why this happens or how to prevent it?   The quiz has been working fine for quite a while and now suddenly, it won't let people through.
