On Prem C7.5/8 presence federation with Lync

We just recently started using Lync and noticed in the C8 install and configure guide the steps used for federating Presence information from OCS to Connect.

Has anyone done this for OCS and/or Lync?  The steps do not translate well over to Lync.

Having experimented with it... The questions I have are:

Do I need the XMPP Gateway?

The presence service starts but port 10020 opens and closes.  This is with vanilla config files.  Is that the expected behavior?

Any gotchas that is not documented in the guide?
