Running Adobe Connect 9.3, what will happen at the end of the month?

Hello,

Given that Flash is being retired at end of this month, does anyone know what will happen to older on-prem instances of Adobe Connect after that? We're running version 9.3 which we haven't been able to upgrade in quite some time. Details from version.txt are listed later.

I'm aware of the doc Adobe Connect FAQ Repsonse (sic) to Flash EOL Announcement, however that addresses UI support in Connect 9.7 and I'm not sure we will be able to upgrade in time. We know that the ability to play Flash-based content will break after the end of the month, but there are HTML5 packages that people expect to run without Flash, so I'm trying to understand to Connect after that.

Here's what version.txt says:

If you are using the Connect App (rather than the Add-in), then you should be fine. The Flash EOL will affect all browsers and will likely mean that they all push and update on Jan 1 to remove/block the Flash Player entirely. Maybe there will be 3rd party options for a while, but who knows.

So, the meeting function in the browser will be gone for your users. The App has a self contained, sand boxed version of Flash in it, and isn't affected by the browsers disabling Flash. The Connect 9-10 App will be supported by the Connect product team for a while, but I'd be concerned about any real support for it beyond 2021. That may put a bit more distance on your run way though, and get your account users into 2021 without rushing your upgrade.

Thank you Jorma.

At this point we do not use Adobe Connect for conferencing, only as a platform to host SCORM packages. So we don't use the Connect App or Add-In.

Since starting this thread, I found Adobe Flash Player EOL General Information Page which says "To help secure users’ systems, Adobe will block Flash content from running in Flash Player beginning January 12, 2021."

Right now, HTML5 packages hosted in our on-prem Adobe Connect system run without Flash, and that's true when I set the client machine's system date to be a couple months into the future as well. Given the information on the page above though, if using the most recent version of the Flash Player, after January 12, 2021 it will be impossible for me to load the Connect admin interface!

I'm not sure when, but it appears Adobe added a kill switch to Flash Player. And they're going to flip that switch on January 12, 2021. It turns out, older versions of Flash Player might not have that kill switch, which is good since I need Flash to be able to manage our on-prem instance for a little longer.

Thanks again,

-Alex

Re: Running Adobe Connect 9.3, what will happen at the end of the month?

Yeah, seems that way. There may be some 3rd party plugins for browsers that will continue to allow Flash content, but it's a real gamble.

Connect 9.3 is 2014 technology. So, realistically, getting 5-6 years out of an application without doing updates or patches is pretty dang good. Maybe it is time to consider re-investing to get a version that will allow you continued use into 2021 and beyond?
