Editing a recording's videostream
Hi there,
after a long time of absence I have another problem - maybe somebody here can be of help...
I have a recording that needs to be edited. I cannot use Connect's built-in editing feature (and, frankly, I don't want to...), but instead I need to edit the files directly,
So far, I identified all the folders I need and the videostream as well. This videostream needs editing - I need to cut out a few seconds. Cutting out isn't really necessary, it would be sufficient to mute the sound for a few seconds.
These are my problems:
- Which editing software can I use to edit .flv? I have access to Premiere CS3. Are there good converting tools that convert this .flv to .avi? SUPER, for example, fails.
- Which parameters do I need to set for the edited .flv so that it works on Connect? Of course, I won't change its duration.
Any help is highly appreciated!
Thanks,
Oliver

Re: Editing a recording's videostream
Hi Oliver,
If you are editing the downloaded zip of the complete recording (in lieue of the offline FLV,) and need to cut some sound from the audio FLV, one trick is to convert the FLV to an MP3, edit in audacity, and reconvert to FLV.
You may download any recording by appending the following line to any archive URL:
/output/anyName.zip?download=zip
I see from your post that you want to avoid the online editing tool. One tip may help if you download a problematic recording that you previously attempted to edit online.
Note: Be already logged into the Connect account as an admin (this download command will not work if you just click on it or throw it into a browser – it will throw a permissions error):
http://company.acrobat.com/recordingURL … wnload=zip
For example, if a problematic edited archive (illustrated in the URL above) has dead air from resulting in a skip in the recording. There is one trick, that is noteworthy. If you edited a recording online and then download it this way, in the downloaded zip you will see a file called edit.xml. In the edit.xml for this example recording it reads:
<editList>
<editPoint id="1" editBegin="336" editEnd="352" cummDiff="16" />
</editList
This xml file entry makes the recording skip 16 seconds of the recording online. You may fine tune this a bit by editing this file in notepad then uploading the entire recording.zip to the content tab and play it from there. This will not eliminate the basic deficiency of forcing a visible skip of content, but it can help with incremental changes of one or two seconds at the beginning and end of the edited portion; for example if you wanted this recording to be edited from a 16 second to a 14 second deletion by adding two seconds at the beginning of the edited portion you could change it as follows:
<editList>
<editPoint id="1" editBegin="338" editEnd="352" cummDiff="14" />
</editList
With reference to editing the offline FLVs: One workaround is to buy an third-party add on for Premiere from http://www.moyea.com/import-flv It provides support for FLV files encoded by any codec, including: Flash 8, H.263, RAW, ADPCM, MP3 and Nellymoser. The price was $59.95 – not sure if that holds; it is an add-in and it looks like it will set up Premiere to edit offline FLV archives downloaded from Connect. This add-in is needed because there is a problem with editing the FLVs in Premiere around the Nellymoser codec

Re: Editing a recording's videostream
you can use avidemux to convert your video to avi and reconvert it after editing to .flv. the generated .flv should work on connect.

Wow, this is neat!!! Where do I get such information? Is it hidden in the docs?
I forgot to mention that we own our own Connect-server so I have direct access to the files. Is there by any chance an instruction somewhere on how to translate the meeting's (or resource's) URL to the more cryptic connect folder-names? (e.g. the URL company.connect.com/r12345678 -> folder 141657-3)
Thanks for the help, I will give it a try and get back with my results!
Regards,
Oliver

Re: Editing a recording's videostream
Hi,
I am not sure about folder name editing, but if you upload the edited zip to content, it will play fine as long as you publish it to the same account as the meeting and as long as the edited recording can access and display the meeting content. Problems occur when you delete the meeting or lock it down or publish the archive somewhere other than the parent account.

to 'translate' the url into a folder location append ?mode-xml to the end of your URL. Then look for the appinstance tag -- it points to the folder structure.
here's a doc (previously posted here by me) with some further info/instructions about recordings: Keyframe Repair Using camera AND Voice
