PDF files and Connect Pro

RESOLVED

I have uploaded a pdf file to my connect Central. the upload went fine and Connect Central  gives me the direct link to it. when I get into the room I created, it is not showing up in the shared content. I guess it means it is not a valid format content althought I have read in the  the connect pro documentation that pdf files were a valid file  format for Connect. So , where does Adobe Connect stands regarding pdf files? can we play a multi pages pdf file into a room and if yes, how? if no, should not it be a priority for Connect developers to make it a valid file format? it just seems weird that such  a wide spread format such as pdf files would not be one of the obvious compatible file format for Adobe Connect pro . sorry if this  message is echoing  an already existing message. I gave it a quick look but did not find a similar question .

Re: PDF files and Connect Pro

ACCEPTED SOLUTION

.pdf is not an acceptable file type in a Connect Pro Meeting Room. The absolute best way to see what you acceptable file types in a Connect Pro Meeting Room are is to click the drop down arrow on the browse window when you're selecting a file to choose form your computer:
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/1948/acpacceptedfiletypes.jpg
But since .pdf is not an acceptable file type, it won't show in your browse window when you're browsing through your Content Library, either. Only acceptable file types will.

You are able to upload it to your Content Library in Connect Pro Central and obtain a direct link. If you click that link, you'll notice that the  .pdf will show up in your browser because in reality, all you're actually doing is hosting a .pdf. To display a .pdf in a Connect Pro Meeting Room, you can screenshare it - either through Desktop Sharing and/or Application Sharing. After you've shared it with your Participants, you can also make it available for download with the File Share Pod. This is common practice.

As for .pdf support in Connect Pro, I hope we see that in the next version release of Connect Pro, in all honesty. I know that it is a topic that has been brought up before, so I imagine it is at least on the radar. If anyone from Adobe can confirm this, it'd be much appreciated.

Re: PDF files and Connect Pro

If the native file format is something other than pdf, and is a word doc for example, you can use flashpaper or www.print2flash.com to convert it into a swf that will load into a meeting room.

Re: PDF files and Connect Pro

thanks both for your contribution.  I have since search for a solution and found it effectively  through using macromedia flash paper2 (available for download in the Connect Central resources  ofr Adobe Connect Pro licenced users) . I came then on an other problem : my initial pdf file  was landscape orientation. when I transformed it to a a flash file via flash paper2, the result was  in portrait orientation;  not very practical for online viewing ;-) )....  this problem is well documented in this TechNote :
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewCon … ;sliceId=1
in brief it says :
"Use the print dialog box to create landscape-oriented FlashPaper documents
Instead of using the drag-and-drop method described above, use the File > Print menu to choose the orientation of the resulting FlashPaper document or PDF when creating landscape-oriented FlashPaper documents."
in other words, open your pdf with its native application  and in the print dialog box, choose flash paper 2 as a virtual printer , don't forget to specify  the landscape orientation before  printing to swf file. the resulting file opens in the flash paper 2 window, save it  and you'r all set to import it to your Connect room.

note  : Flash paper2 is a .exe program

Re: PDF files and Connect Pro

PDFs on Connect Pro are really meant to be used as part of Training course or curriculum items.  Perhaps in the future they might render or transcode into a share pod but I imagine that would take a lot of engineering work.  You can place flash content into a PDF in acrobat but you cannot place a pdf into a flash (.swf) object, container or movie.  FlashPaper would be the recommended solution or opening Acrobat and screen sharing that.  Also depending on how you use the pdf you can always use the Collaborate Live features within Acrobat 9 (taking nothing away from Connect) just mentioning other options for PDF users.

Re: PDF files and Connect Pro

I think the real ironic detail in all of this is that the application is called Adobe ACROBAT Connect Pro.  Acrobat is a brand name that for years has represented one of Adobe's oldest file formats.  It leaves me wondering A) who thought calling it "Acrobat Connect Pro" was a good idea that wouldn't confuse users and B) who thought it was a good idea to leave one of Adobes' oldest file formats out in the cold.

Seems to me that a PDF would be a great medium for getting large documents or graphics into Connect.

Strange indeed.

Re: PDF files and Connect Pro

In Adobe's defence, they didn't make the program initially, just just poor choice in naming.  That being said, I have heard many people express interest in having PDFsupport, so maybe one day Adobe will listen to the suggestion.

Re: PDF files and Connect Pro

Just to clarify for anyone who has this issue.  Based on this KB article from Adobe:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403663.html

Licensed Connect customers can download Flashpaper from their Connect server for free, rather than paying $79 for the product.

Re: PDF files and Connect Pro

Hosted account users can also download FlashPaper. To do this:
1.) Log into your Connect Pro account
2.) Click on the 'Resources' tab
3.) Click the Open button on the 'Getting Started' portion
4.) Click on 'Install Adobe FlashPaper'

Please keep in mind that this is for Windows only.

Re: PDF files and Connect Pro

What makes the whole thing even more frustrating is that Acrobat has the option to share a PDF in a Connect Pro meeting room, except Connect Pro doesn't support PDF. WTF. Further more when I first started looking at Connect Pro for our organization the online documentation and sales material stated you can use PDFs with Connect Pro.

My WTF watermark got a lot of use explaining that one to management. If the next version of ACP were to support PDFs I would be willing to over look the VoIP shortcomings for at least a full year.

Connect has never supported PDF in the meeting room. This is part of the upgrades that will come with Connect 7.5. Flash Paper has always been the tool of getting documents into the Connect room.

As to the print orientation issue, treat Flash Paper like any other print driver. Just go into the settings before pressing the final print button and tell it to print to landscape or portrait as needed.

Re: PDF files and Connect Pro

Jorma,

I realize now that it has never been supported by Connect Pro but that wasn't the frustration I was indicating. In my initial reading of the documentation prior to purchasing, and indeed in conversation with sale representatives, PDF support was indicated and promised. I was speaking to the option in Reader to connect to a meeting room.

Acrobat Reader has a start meeting function in which you can add Connect meeting room URL and security credentials. With that information entered in the Meeting Preferences, when you then click on "start meeting" from inside Reader it will open a connect meeting. This is what I was  referring to. I may not fully understand the purpose or use of this option in Reader but as the name of both products puts them in the same product line one would assume they would work together.

Links to screen shots are below.

https://admin.na4.acrobat.com/_a829239800/acro_start/

I think you can see where my frustration is coming from.

Flashpaper is ok but definitely not as good as pdf. Our users find it difficult to interact with the document. It basically recreated your document as a swf image. I find it to be less than useful.
