Understanding Roles and Managing Attendees

Every attendee in an Adobe Connect room takes on one of three roles: host, presenter, or participant. These roles determine what each attendee can and can't do. Although every room has a maximum capacity, there is no limit for each of the roles. You can make everyone in your room a host if that's what you want to do.

Participants

There's a lot a participant can interact with in an Adobe Connect room - they can chat, respond to polls, set their status, and interact with custom pods. There's very little a participant can do to share content or change the look and feel of the room though. Participans cannot move or hide pods, they cannot add new pods or share their screen. By default, participants can't even broadcast audio or turn on their webcam - although it's easy to give them this permission.

Presenters

Presenters in an Adobe Connect meeting can share and present. They can't change the look and feel of the room. Using a share pod, a presenter can share her screen, upload a PowerPoint or PDF document, turn on their webcam, use their microphone and add notes in a notes pod. They can't add a new pod to the stage though or change the active layout.

Hosts

Hosts can do virtually anything in an Adobe Connect room, and their interface reflects this power. They have a layouts panel which can be used to change layouts, they can add, hide, move, and resize any pods on the stage, and they can also manage breakout rooms. In essence, a host can not only share information, but also determine what the virtual room looks like and what functionality it includes.

To change the role of an attendee, a host can select them from the Attendees menu, then choose Change Role and select a new role. Multiple attendees can be selected at once. Alternatively, attendees can be dragged from one role to another.

In the video below, I outline the different roles in Adobe Connect and show you how to manage attendees.
